How to successfully Hire a Diverse Workforce

Finding, hiring and retaining top talent is tough. Throw diversity and inclusion initiatives into the mix and your job gets even more complicated. But it doesn’t have to be.

Workplace diversity is a big trending topic these days, for good reason. Though there’s an element of corporate responsibility involved in ensuring workplaces are inclusive for all, there’s also a strong business case for diversity. Studies have shown diverse workplaces are better for companies from a bottom-line perspective, too. Diverse companies are more innovative and position themselves to attract stronger talent. They also grow faster and have an easier time reaching new markets.

Recruiting for diversity is hard work for sure, but over time, a diverse workforce will attract diverse candidates and will make your job easier in the long run. At a time when the world is your market, a diverse workforce can provide a competitive advantage to your business. In a 2018 research study, McKinsey found that the top quartile of gender-diverse companies was 21 percent more likely to experience above-average profitability than companies in the bottom quartile. The Boston Consulting Group found that companies with a Blau Index (a measure of diversity) above the median experienced “38% more of their revenues, on average, from innovative products and services when compared to those companies below the median.”

The following is a list of eight suggestions to help companies begin building a diverse workforce.

  • Look for talent in unlikely places and broaden your search

  • Use innovative hiring methods

  • Encourage referrals from diverse employees

  • Offer workplace flexibility

  • Set diversity hiring goals

  • Create a work culture that values diversity, beginning with your HR policies

  • Showcase existing diversity in your team.

  • Actively increase the pipeline of women to middle and senior management roles

Hence Diversity and inclusivity measures in the workplace are not just a popular sentiment or a legal requirement, it’s a solid approach to building a high performing business.
